You’re Not Alone: What FIP Parents Often Feel (And That’s Normal)
Dr. Jonathan ReedShare
The first week of FIP treatment can feel overwhelming — emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Many cat parents expect immediate, steady improvement once treatment begins. When that doesn’t happen right away, fear and self-doubt often follow. But the truth is: ups and downs are extremely common, especially during the first 3–7 days of treatment.
Your cat’s body is adjusting. Inflammation is beginning to respond. Internal healing has started — even if you can’t see it yet.
If today feels hard, that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

Today’s Priority: Keep It Simple
In the early stage of treatment, your goal is not perfection — it’s consistency.
When emotions are high, it helps to narrow your focus. Today, you only need to do three things:
-
✔ Confirm your cat’s current weight
-
✔ Confirm today’s dosage (do not adjust without guidance)
-
✔ Give medication at the same time every day
That’s it.
You don’t need to predict tomorrow.
You don’t need to see dramatic changes today.
Consistency matters more than speed. Steady treatment gives the medication time to work and your cat’s body time to respond.
What’s Normal in the First 3–7 Days (Don’t Panic)
During the first week, many cats show mixed or fluctuating responses. This can be confusing — and scary — but it is often part of the normal healing process.
You may notice:
-
✔ Mild appetite changes (eating less, skipping a meal, or being picky)
-
✔ Injection discomfort or soreness at the injection site
-
✔ Energy levels going up and down throughout the day
Some cats may seem better one day and quieter the next.
Others improve slowly in small, barely noticeable ways.
❗ These signs do NOT mean treatment is failing.
FIP recovery is rarely a straight line.
Healing happens internally before it shows externally.
Even small improvements still count — and sometimes stability itself is progress.
